Background
I’ve been engaged with Baltimore City Department of Transportation for years about the poorly constructed and/or maintained crosswalks in front of my home, and others.
I’m at 1800 Eastern Avenue, which is heavily congested with a high volume of traffic that includes many heavy trucks and city buses.
Unlike the rest of Eastern Avenue, the crosswalks were not properly constructed or maintained, and haven’t been for the 26 years I have lived here.
The result is violent shaking throughout the day and night, every day, that damages my home and potentially puts my family at risk should it lead to a catastrophic collapse. (A building collapsed at the intersection one block west of mine a while ago, who had similar shaking issues adjacent to the same type of crosswalk.) It also wakes us up often in the middle of the night and is a significant quality of life issue.
I have A LOT of documentation of the back and forth between myself, DOT, Zeke Cohen’s office, and other neighbors who live at or near this crosswalk, or similar crosswalks in the area, who also experience violent shaking.
I have made PIA inquiries about the construction of the crosswalks as well as the requirements of the Eastern Avenue road construction to get some clarity about what is required for such a high volume corridor with so many old buildings immediately adjacent to the traffic. My requests were never specific enough to result in any documentation turned over, as apparently I need an actual document name or number to reference.
I have also been able to provide clear evidence that the issue lies with the crosswalk area, and that a fix is not only possible, but has been achieved temporarily in the past.
